Levi McCathern is recognized as one of the premier defense lawyers in Texas. He is Board Certified in both Civil Trial Law and Labor and Employment Law by the Texas Board of Specialization. This double certification is held by only 26 of the 75,000 attorneys in the State of Texas. Mr. McCathern specializes in catastrophic damage litigation and is routinely called upon to defend all types of specialized, high-damage claims, including patent and trademark litigation. He has served as lead counsel in numerous jury trials and is frequently requested to provide legal consultation to companies throughout the country. He presently serves as primary trial counsel for the Dallas Cowboys Football Club, Ltd., the Jerry Jones family and their related entities, and is panel counsel for several of the largest insurance companies in the world in specialty coverage areas including Director & Officer Liability, Employment Law, and advertising injury.
In 2010, Levi was again nominated by his peers to the Texas Super Lawyers® list. The annual Texas Super Lawyers list, designed to identify the top Texas attorneys in multiple practice areas, is based on a statewide survey of attorneys, independent research, and evaluation of candidates.
Levi was born in Perryton, Texas, in 1969 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in 1990 from Baylor University where he was selected Phi Beta Kappa. In 1993, Levi earned a Juris Doctorate from Baylor University, where he became a member of the Order of Barristers. During his 5 years in the Waco area, he also served as Pastor of First Baptist Church in Travis, Texas. Being raised by a minister in West Texas then pastoring a church himself, he brings an everyman perspective to his vibrant North and East Texas practice that juries love and is seldom found in Texas litigation.
In November 1993, Levi was licensed to practice law in the State of Texas. That fall, he became an associate with the law firm of Godwin & Carlton, P.C. and, in less than 5 years, he was named the youngest shareholder in the firm's history. On October 1, 1998, Levi founded McCathern Wadlington Mooty L.L.P., currently known as McCathern L.L.P. He is licensed to practice in Texas and New York, and is admitted for practice in all Texas state and federal district courts, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, all state courts in New York, and all federal district courts of Arkansas.
While maintaining a statewide practice, Levi has enjoyed unusual success in the historically more liberal courts of the northern and eastern parts of Texas. He has obtained multiple favorable verdicts for clients all over Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. His strength is the same in and out of the courtroom – relating to all people, from janitors to CEOs, on their level.
